Budgeting with Anxiety: The Zombie Apocalypse Plan
I saw a video the other day that made me laugh, then made me feel seen.
A woman was explaining how to survive a zombie apocalypse: find the person with the most trauma. They already have a backup plan. They won’t be slow to react, because they’ve been planning for this their whole life. Their body has been on high alert for years.
I laughed. Then I thought, oh. That’s me.
My brain plans for everything
If you have anxiety, you probably know this feeling. Your mind runs ahead to every “what if.” What if the car makes that noise again? What if the paycheck is late? What if a kid needs something tomorrow that costs money I haven’t planned for?
For a long time I thought that was a flaw I had to fix. Now I see it a little differently. My brain is trying to keep everyone safe. It just needs somewhere to put all those plans.
Why the usual budgeting apps didn’t work for me
I gave a few popular budgeting apps an honest try. They were well made, and plenty of people love them. But most of them asked me to look at one month at a time and budget only the money already in my account.
My anxiety took one look and said: I can’t live like this.
Seeing only this month left all the big “what ifs” sitting in the dark. Rent next month. Car insurance in three months. That bill that only shows up twice a year. My brain was planning for all of it anyway, just without anywhere to write it down.
What calms me down is seeing everything
Here’s what I learned about myself: the calm comes from seeing.
When I can see every account, every bill, and every paycheck coming up, my shoulders come down a little. When I can see which paycheck covers rent next month, and the one after, my brain finally gets to stop rehearsing it.
That’s what “control” feels like for me. It isn’t about having everything figured out. It’s about having everything in view.
Planning ahead, with room to breathe
So that’s how I built BudgetHaven:
- You can look as far ahead as you need. Paycheck after paycheck, each with the bills it covers and what’s left over.
- Left over so far adds up quietly, so you can watch breathing room build.
- Plan it keeps a little back on each paycheck for surprises, because surprises are coming. My brain already knows that.
- Plans can change. There’s always Undo, and changing the plan is part of the plan.
If this is you too
You’re not too much. Your brain is a planner, and planners need a place to plan.
You get to find whatever kind of calm works for you. For me, it turned out to be one clear view of everything, so my brain can finally rest.
And if the zombies ever do show up, you know where to find me. I’ll be the one with the backup plan, and the snacks are already budgeted.
